note to self: i’ll be there for you, always

written june 6, 2021. Photo by Kristine Cinate on Unsplash I have always looked for myself in other people. I think the idea was that they would somehow hold the pieces of me that I felt were missing. That maybe, if I wrapped my identity up in theirs enough, we would somehow make a whole person. It's not healthy to live like this, but I did it anyway — burning through relationships and searching for something I couldn't quite name. It was never enough, not to be myself, but it was never enough to latch my identity to other people, either. I got close, several times — I thought I had reached the pinnacle of self discovery. I thought I had completed myself. But in the end, relying on other people to help build yourself is never a viable way to do things. It's only recently that I've started to become comfortable with the idea of being enough, as I am, on my own. Several years ago, in this same position, I would have searched for another person to attach my identity onto,

Beautiful People Is Back!

Hello friends!

As I write this, Hall of Fame is playing on my iPod, I'm exhausted, and it is precisely 12:31 AM.

However, I have something much more important to share with you today!

As some of you know, a few years back Georgie Penn and I started a blog thing for writers titled Beautiful People. Every month we'd post ten questions for you to answer about your characters. The purpose was to help you get to know your characters better.

Due to insane life circumstances, Beautiful People was put on indefinite hiatus, which made it come to a halt. It's been about two years since we stopped, and after doing my BP post for Kess, I started missing it. A lot.

All that to say...? I'm sure you may have figured out where this was going already.

Ready for this?

BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE IS BACK, EVERYONE!

And now for the details!

Georgie and I can no longer host it together because Georgie is crazy-busy working, and she also doesn't have internet at her apartment. Because of this, I wondered who I could find to be my co-host. Why, Cait from Notebook Sisters, of course! (She kindly agreed.)

We've been bursting with excitement to announce this, and we've been plotting together for a few weeks now as well. The general format of BP will remain the same, but as you can see we're rebooting the graphics, some of which is still in the works!

But back to the 10 questions every month. That's where you come in. We need you to submit questions! If you have any questions off of the top of your head, or any questions that have worked especially well for you in character development in the past, please leave them in a comment on this post, or Cait's blog post, and we'll do our best to work them in! You can also email them to us as well. (Here, and here.)

The tentative date for the first round of Beautiful People is June 5th! Mark it down, and spread the word!

Don't forget to check out Cait's post about Beautiful People here. Her post also contains our shiny new FAQ--with much thanks to Cait for helping to polish it up!

And now, stay tuned and send us any and all questions you have! We can't wait to get started!

  1. I am so excited that you are restarting Beautiful People. I joined the blogging world a little bit late to join the fun before you stopped so I am very much looking forward to it.
    Some questions I like are:
    1. What is his motive?
    2. What is he prepared to do to get what he wants?
    3. How does he deal with conflict?
    4. Describe his current place of residence.
    5. If he were writing this story, how would it end?
    6. What habits, speech patterns, etc. are unique to him?
    7. How does he show love? What does he like to do with/for people he loves?
    8. Does he have any pets?
    9. Where would he go to relax/think?
    10. What is his weapon of choice (FYI: words, eyes/looks, and fists count as weapons, too)

I hope these are helpful and that you can use them at some point. Have fun!

6.) When on a mission, is it finish and get to the goal at all cost, or is it have some fun, 'we'll get there when we get' there type deal.
