note to self: i’ll be there for you, always

written june 6, 2021. Photo by Kristine Cinate on Unsplash I have always looked for myself in other people. I think the idea was that they would somehow hold the pieces of me that I felt were missing. That maybe, if I wrapped my identity up in theirs enough, we would somehow make a whole person. It's not healthy to live like this, but I did it anyway — burning through relationships and searching for something I couldn't quite name. It was never enough, not to be myself, but it was never enough to latch my identity to other people, either. I got close, several times — I thought I had reached the pinnacle of self discovery. I thought I had completed myself. But in the end, relying on other people to help build yourself is never a viable way to do things. It's only recently that I've started to become comfortable with the idea of being enough, as I am, on my own. Several years ago, in this same position, I would have searched for another person to attach my identity onto,

Beautiful People Is Back!

Hello friends!

As I write this, Hall of Fame is playing on my iPod, I'm exhausted, and it is precisely 12:31 AM.

However, I have something much more important to share with you today!

As some of you know, a few years back Georgie Penn and I started a blog thing for writers titled Beautiful People. Every month we'd post ten questions for you to answer about your characters. The purpose was to help you get to know your characters better.

Due to insane life circumstances, Beautiful People was put on indefinite hiatus, which made it come to a halt. It's been about two years since we stopped, and after doing my BP post for Kess, I started missing it. A lot.

All that to say...? I'm sure you may have figured out where this was going already.

Ready for this?

And now for the details!

Georgie and I can no longer host it together because Georgie is crazy-busy working, and she also doesn't have internet at her apartment. Because of this, I wondered who I could find to be my co-host. Why, Cait from Notebook Sisters, of course! (She kindly agreed.)

We've been bursting with excitement to announce this, and we've been plotting together for a few weeks now as well. The general format of BP will remain the same, but as you can see we're rebooting the graphics, some of which is still in the works!

But back to the 10 questions every month. That's where you come in. We need you to submit questions! If you have any questions off of the top of your head, or any questions that have worked especially well for you in character development in the past, please leave them in a comment on this post, or Cait's blog post, and we'll do our best to work them in! You can also email them to us as well. (Here, and here.)

The tentative date for the first round of Beautiful People is June 5th! Mark it down, and spread the word!

Don't forget to check out Cait's post about Beautiful People here. Her post also contains our shiny new FAQ--with much thanks to Cait for helping to polish it up!

And now, stay tuned and send us any and all questions you have! We can't wait to get started!

  1. I am so excited that you are restarting Beautiful People. I joined the blogging world a little bit late to join the fun before you stopped so I am very much looking forward to it.
    Some questions I like are:
    1. What is his motive?
    2. What is he prepared to do to get what he wants?
    3. How does he deal with conflict?
    4. Describe his current place of residence.
    5. If he were writing this story, how would it end?
    6. What habits, speech patterns, etc. are unique to him?
    7. How does he show love? What does he like to do with/for people he loves?
    8. Does he have any pets?
    9. Where would he go to relax/think?
    10. What is his weapon of choice (FYI: words, eyes/looks, and fists count as weapons, too)

I hope these are helpful and that you can use them at some point. Have fun!

  2. EEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!! I CANNOT TELL YOU HOW EXCITED I AM. I've missed Beautiful People SO much. I cannot wait! *dances*

Um...I'm having a blank on questions right now, but if I come up with any helpful ones I'll pop back over and let you know.

  3. BP is back!!! Yay!

Here are a few question ideas :)

1.) What is the odd little quirk that makes this character unusual, strange or noticed?
2.) Would he/she be more prone to facing fears or running from them?
2.) Does he/she have a good self image?
3.) If he/she were standing next to you would it make you laugh or cry?
4.) When upset or perturbed is it unusual to find him/her walking alone?
5.) When enamored by another character does he/she pursue relentlessly or find it proper to give the other his/her space?
6.) When on a mission, is it finish and get to the goal at all cost, or is it have some fun, 'we'll get there when we get' there type deal.
7.) When it comes to pets and companions outside the human realm, would this character go with a horse, dog, cat or fish? (Seriously guys...a fish??!!)

  4. Ooh, yay! And we get to submit our own questions?? Hurrah! This will be fun.

:: If he/she could transport themselves back in time (or forward in time!), what time period would they choose?

:: Does he/she have a pet companion? If so, tell us about them!

:: Which Lord of the Rings creature would he/she be?

:: Does he/she prefer formal environments or relaxed environments?

:: If he/she inherited a fortune from a long-lost relative, what would be the first thing he/she would do with it?

:: Bare feet or shoes? If shoes, which type of shoes?

:: If he/she wrote an autobiography about themselves, what would he/she title it?

:: If he/she were the author of your story, what would he/she title it?

:: What colour best describes his/her personality?

:: Would he/she more likely scoff at the phrase "curiosity killed the cat" or would he/she be the one using the phrase?

:: Does he/she know how to dance?

:: What is his/her favorite book?

:: Who is a person that he/she looks up to?

  5. *jumps up and down excitedly* Finally! It is back! Oh, these beautiful posts are back! (By the way, EXCELLENT choice on your new BP partner.)

    1. What would this character order at a coffee shop / café?
    2. Which of the Carl/Jung personalities would best describe him/her?
    3. What he/she do if the world were ending with disastrous events such as events like buildings collapsing or fire coming down from the sky (nobody would know that the world was ending, they would only see this horrific events)?
    4. What calms him/her down when he/she is in a desperate situation?
    5. What makes him/her embarrassed?
    6. If he/she was an animal, which animal would he/she be?
    7. Which Disney character has a personality closest to him/her?
    8. If you had to rewrite this character's whole story with a different plot, family, etc., what type of story would you place this character in? Why?

  6. I am so, so excited to hear that BP is returning! I'm not sure if these questions have already appeared in Beautiful People posts, but these are just a few that first came to my mind.

    1. What is his/her favorite genre of music?
    2. What does he/she do for fun in their spare time?
    3. How does he/she handle grief?
    4. How does he/she handle stress?
    5. What was his/her most traumatic experience?
    6. What was a defining moment in his/her life?
    7. If anyone, who does he/her aspire to the most and why?
    8. What is the most serious injury he/she has ever sustained?
    9. What kind of relationship does he/she have with his/her parents, guardians, siblings, close relatives, etc...?
    10. What is his/her love language (words of affirmation, acts of service, quality time, gifts, or physical touch)?

Looking forward to answering your next set of questions!

  7. So many people are excited about this. :D
