note to self: i’ll be there for you, always
written june 6, 2021. Photo by Kristine Cinate on Unsplash I have always looked for myself in other people. I think the idea was that they would somehow hold the pieces of me that I felt were missing. That maybe, if I wrapped my identity up in theirs enough, we would somehow make a whole person. It's not healthy to live like this, but I did it anyway — burning through relationships and searching for something I couldn't quite name. It was never enough, not to be myself, but it was never enough to latch my identity to other people, either. I got close, several times — I thought I had reached the pinnacle of self discovery. I thought I had completed myself. But in the end, relying on other people to help build yourself is never a viable way to do things. It's only recently that I've started to become comfortable with the idea of being enough, as I am, on my own. Several years ago, in this same position, I would have searched for another person to attach my identity onto,
Lucy Pevensie as well. I'm not exactly sure why, but I think that her warm heart and believing soul made me fall in love with Narnia all the more. :))

JUST ONE??!?!
ReplyDeleteI think you're trying to kill me. (Jk, lol)
Oh, uhm...Hmm..one. Just one...
I've decided. I think...Yes, I'm pretty sure.
Percy Blackney. Yes, Oh how I love my beloved Scarlet Pimpernel. I love how amazing he is. Amazing. Gallant. Handsome *squeal*, Wonderful. Romantic, and such a HERO. Yes, PErcy Blackney/Scarlet Pimpernel is moine.
favorite character? That's really hard. I'm divided between Anne (the older more mature Anne) and Sherlock Holmes. :)
ReplyDeleteAnne, simply because she is Anne, forever full of wonder and adventure. And Sherlock, because of all his little eccentricities.
What a great giveaway!
Beth March in Little Women, because she is so sweet, helpful, and hopeful
ReplyDeleteedmund from "The Chronicles of Narnia." i identify with him so incredibly much. the broken, the traitor, the forgotten turned King and forgiven and restored.
ReplyDeleteBetsy Ray, from 'The Betsy-Tacy Series' by Maud Hart Lovelace. Because she is what I am, and also what I never will be.
ReplyDeleteI love Lemony Snicket. I love how brilliant the writer was in setting Snicket up as both the author and a character in the stories. It's amazing. Also, Melanie from Gone with the Wind. Her quiet strength is admirable, and when Scarlett realizes how important Melanie is to her, it's so amazingly poetic and wrenching. I love it.
ReplyDeleteSuch a hard question!! But in the end, I think I have to say Luna Lovegood from Harry Potter, because she's so unique and always makes me smile. I want to be her friend. <3
ReplyDeleteOf course, very VERY close second - practically tied - would be Sam Gamgee from the Lord of the Rings, because he's the sweetest and most loyal friend in the whole world, fiction or not. ;)
I love fictional characters so much!! <3
One of my favorites (for there are many) has to be Juli Baker from Flipped. I love her spunky personality and independent free spirit.
ReplyDeleteYou just had to go and ask the hardest question of all! Ummmm....I'll have to dig deeply into my head for this one. Well, perhaps not. I don't know if I'd say she's my favorite character overall, but Harry (Angharad) from The Blue Sword. She's very similar to Aravis in some respects (who is my favorite from CoN).
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, that is my final answer! ;)
Jean Valjean from Les Miserables. Without a doubt. I love the outcast characters. Sydney Carton comes up as a very close second, but Valjean wins out. I love how he changes throughout the book, going from a hardened convict to a gentle, loving, merciful man.
ReplyDelete~Keaghan
Elisa Linder from The Zion Covenant series. I like her character because she puts her life in danger to help Jewish children escape Germany during WWII without evening worrying about the consequences if she was caught. I love how she is brave and courageous. We need more people like her to have lived during that time.
ReplyDeleteOkay, my favorite literary character ever? That is hard, hard, hard. But I'm going to have to go with Gen, from The Queen's Thief series (by Megan Whalen Turner). He's brilliant, he's unselfish, and he's every bit the gentleman. :)
ReplyDeleteAck! So hard, but I'd have to say...
ReplyDeleteSHERLOCK HOLMES!!!!
He's just so amazingly smart! Even if he is a bit of a snob, I can't help but love him because of how strong a character he is.
P.S. My answer is likely to change depending on what I'm currently reading. This favourite has been induced by watching BBC's Sherlock:)
That's an epic question. :)
ReplyDeleteCan I have a top three? 'Cause picking one is just not fair o_O
So, in no particular order: Ender of Ender's Game, because he..... he's just amazing. And when I read the book, for some reason I totally get sucked into his head like no other character I've read.
Also, Gregor of The Underland Chronicles, 'cause he's sweet to his little sister. And that scores major points :P
And last but not least.... and to be sure, I'm leaving several favorites out here: Horatio Hornblower, because he's such a quirked-up mess, he makes me smile.
