note to self: i’ll be there for you, always

written june 6, 2021. Photo by Kristine Cinate on Unsplash I have always looked for myself in other people. I think the idea was that they would somehow hold the pieces of me that I felt were missing. That maybe, if I wrapped my identity up in theirs enough, we would somehow make a whole person. It's not healthy to live like this, but I did it anyway — burning through relationships and searching for something I couldn't quite name. It was never enough, not to be myself, but it was never enough to latch my identity to other people, either. I got close, several times — I thought I had reached the pinnacle of self discovery. I thought I had completed myself. But in the end, relying on other people to help build yourself is never a viable way to do things. It's only recently that I've started to become comfortable with the idea of being enough, as I am, on my own. Several years ago, in this same position, I would have searched for another person to attach my identity onto,

Beautiful People & A Novel Idea || Violet

my heart is like a stallion, they love it more when it's broken,
do you wanna feel beautiful? do you wanna?
- alone together, fall out boy

It's time to play... Family Feud! Actually, no. It's time for me to fill out questions about my characters! *applause*

I'll be answering the Beautiful People questions down below--so if you haven't joined that already, please feel free! The linky will be open all month and you can find out more here.

And I'm also linking up this week with the new blog link-up hosted by my friend Ashley! I'm really excited about it. It's called A Novel Idea and you can find out more about it by visiting Ashley Aspires.

Today I'll be talking about my character Violet from The Angel Novel (titles pending, as well as all plot details). I started that book in July of '13 for Camp, and ended up stopping after 20k. Currently I'm rewriting it, and I'm hoping this draft sticks. (This is the novel with the corresponding blog post where I talked about Sebastian Stan Beau and made a ton of angel puns.)

I'm featuring Violet today because though I've been trying to write about her for a year at least, I feel like I really don't know too much about her. She is my POV character, though, and during rewrites more about her is coming to light. This post is to hopefully shed even more light on her mysterious personality!

What I do know is that she's sarcastic, sassy, guarded, sad, angry, cynical, semi-depressed, witty, lonely, and I love her to death.

So here we go!
First up, I'm answering the A Novel Idea questions! They work really well as an introduction to my character!

A Novel Idea

What’s his/her name?
Violet Lea Chambers. (Tentatively!)

Are they named after someone?
Currently, no, I don't think so.

Do they have a nickname?
Occasionally, her best friend Beau will call her Vi. Other than that, I don't think so.

How old are they?
17. (I think her birthday is August 16th? We'll go with that for now.)

Hairstyle? Straight, curly, short, long, etc?
Very dark hair, curly, medium-thickness. It goes to her shoulders. Sometimes she'll wear it up in a messy bun, but it's usually down.

Eyes? Color, size, etc?
She has big blue eyes with long, thick eyelashes.

And now for Beautiful People!

1) What’s their favourite food? (Bonus: favourite flavor of chocolate!)
Her favorite food is either spaghetti or Chinese. Chocolate? She likes it dark. Like her soul. (I kid, I kid.)

2) What do they absolutely hate?
Fake people, cheap lines, cliches, and insincerity.

3) What do they enjoy learning about?
Violet has an interest in other countries. She loves watching documentaries about Africa late at night on her couch at 3 am. (Don't judge her. ;))

4) Who is the most influential person in their life?
Beau, her best friend.

5) What is their childhood fear?
The dark, and the monsters that lurk in it.

6) What is something they have always secretly dreamed of doing, but thought impossible?
Traveling. Being successful & doing exciting things. Having a lot of money.

7) What is something he is impractically afraid of?
Heights. Think about the theme of flying contained in this novel and let that sink in. (This is subject to change, but the idea did crack me up.)

8) Are they a night owl or morning person?
HAHA. Night owl, definitely.

9) Do they say everything that pops into their head, or leave a lot unsaid?
On light sarcasm and banter, she has few limits. When it comes to being serious, she tends to leave a lot buried.

10) What are their nervous habits?
Clenching up her muscles to be smaller, curling up into a ball (again, to be smaller), fiddling with the fabric on her pants or hoodie, putting her hair behind her ear.

Please check out A Novel Idea so we can help get it off to a fantastic start! And don't forget that Beautiful People lasts all month. Bring all your characters to the party--we'd love to have you! :)

  1. I'm not judging the 3am in Africa. Hey, I'd do that if I was alive at 3am (but unfortunately I'm dead asleep). Learning about things is awesome. ;) LOVED meeting Violet!

    1. Hey, you know, I just realized I actually SHOULD watch more documentaries! (Since I am [sometimes, unfortunately] awake at 3 am. Insomnia, anyone?) If I'm going to be awake, might as well learn something, y'know?

Thanks so much for the comment and I'm glad you liked it! :D ♥

  3. I like her! Those pictures of her are awesome. And I love the idea of a character afraid of heights in a book with a theme of flying. (I'll have to go look for more posts about this!)

While we're on the subject of linkups, I just started one this month, too. You can check it out here if you want. It's called Talk To Me.
